Washington hails productive Kim-Pompeo talks, mulls new Trump-Kim summit

Earlier, he had tweeted that he had "had a good trip to Pyongyang to meet Chairman Kim". Progress made on Singapore Summit Agreements!

"It is important for us to hear from you as I travel to Pyongyang to make sure that we are fully in sync with respect to missile programs, (chemical and biological weapons) programs", Pompeo told Abe.

"Secretary Pompeo said he and Chairman Kim concurred that they will hold the second U.S". He and Biegun both said they expected meetings at the working level to begin soon and become quite frequent before the next summit.

Pompeo has denied there's any daylight between him and Trump.

Pompeo had flown to Pyongyang from Tokyo after talks there with Japan's prime minister during which he pledged the Trump administration would coordinate and unify its strategy for denuclearisation with allies.

During his private meeting with Moon, Pompeo said, he and Kim had agreed to arrange the second U.S.

Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang occurred amid negative signals from North Korea whose actions have fallen short of Washington's demands for a complete inventory of its nuclear weapons and irreversible steps to give up an arsenal that potentially threatens the United States.

What path forward discussions take is the critical question that many analysts expect to be answered this time.

After a summit between the leaders of the two Koreas last month, Kim said he was prepared to permanently dismantle his country's main nuclear site at Yongbyon, but only if the United States took "corresponding steps" to build trust.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was in Seoul Sunday evening after holding "productive" talks with Kim in Pyongyang in the morning. Pompeo has said the U.S.is "making the progress we need".

The larger question now is what the USA demands in return for it.

The North has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and has insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks. "So this is, I think, a good outcome for all", he noted.

Pompeo and Moon also said they hoped a second Trump-Kim summit would happen soon.

Kang agreed, saying that any declaration would be "political" and "not a legally blinding treaty". It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.

"None of these have addressed the core task on denuclearization, which is declaration, verification and timeline", said Victor Cha, the Korea chair at CSIS who was at one point Trump's leading candidate for USA ambassador to South Korea. -China trade relations: "Because of our much tougher Trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were (despite the UN Sanctions which are in place)". "North Korea policy differences", said Bruce Klinger, former CIA Korea deputy mission chief and now a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

The South Koreans said the US and North Korea discussed establishing formal negotiating groups to set a "denuclearization process" and work out a time and location for a follow-up meeting to the first Trump-Kim summit in June.

"Yeah, so we had a great, great visit this morning", Pompeo replied.

President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un during their June meeting in Singapore. "Thanks for hosting me and my team".

Today's visit will thus likely aim to fix damaged bilateral ties while reaffirming a commitment to North Korean denuclearisation-the general goal of Mr Pompeo's tour.

Despite public criticism from analysts that the US has obtained little on the disarmament front, Trump and his team point to a lack of nuclear and missile tests since late past year as signs that their strategy is working. That coordination was clear on the world stage, when both countries' foreign ministers made statements at the Security Council.

The governments of both North and South Korea, however, say that is unrealistic.
