SpaceX plans Vandenberg satellite launch Sunday evening may create sonic boom

SpaceX has previously landed first stage rockets on land after Florida launches but had not done so on the West Coast.

The satellite is the first of two for Argentina's space agency, Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales, and will work in conjunction with a constellation of Italian space agency satellites. The rocket plume is expected to be illuminated by the sun after the launch at 7:21 p.m. Sunday.

SpaceX has successfully recovered a Falcon 9 Block 5 booster on a land-based landing zone for the first time in the rocket's brief history, marking the debut of the company's West Coast LZ-4 and the second flight of a reused Block 5 booster. Please let us know where you took the image.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the SAOCOM-1A Earth-observation satellite launches from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base on October 7, 2018. The booster, meanwhile, relit its engines to maneuver itself for the return trip to SpaceX's landing zone, not far from the launch pad.

And, less than 8 minutes after liftoff, the booster's first stage came back to Earth for a pinpoint touchdown at SpaceX's Vandenberg landing zone, just a quarter-mile (400 meters) from its launch pad. The satellite is created to provide radar imagery to help emergency responders and monitor the environment, including the collection of soil moisture measurements. SpaceX's landing record now stands at 30 successful booster recoveries, 11 at Cape Canaveral, one at Vandenberg and 18 on droneships.

The satellite is the first of two that will be used for emergency management and for land monitoring.
