King: Serena 'totally out of line'

King: Serena 'totally out of line'

In the wake of Osaka's first Grand Slam triumph, there were messages of support for Williams as well as those condemning her behaviour and agreeing with the umpire's calls.

In an interview with ESPN on Sunday, USTA President Katrina Adams called the US Open event "unfortunate" and argued that things would have been different if Williams were a male player.

An Australian newspaper defended its cartoonist on Tuesday after publishing a caricature of Serena Williams having a temper tantrum at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, which civil rights leaders, celebrities and fans condemned as racist.

Tennis umpires are reportedly considering boycotting matches involving Serena Williams after the athlete's controversial loss in the U.S. Open women's tennis final on Saturday. Ings insisted that the "Umpires are just upset".

"She said that she was proud of me and that I should know that the crowd wasn't booing at me, so I was really happy she said that", Osaka said.

After the match, Twitter users and tennis commentators alike said the penalties assessed to Williams were excessively harsh, and some said they may have reflected sexism and racism in tennis officiating.

In the fallout of the incident, the U.S. Tennis Association and Women's Tennis Association both came out in support of Williams.

Officials with the Women's Tennis Association and United States Tennis Association backed Williams' claims of sexism, which according to the Times has angered umpires. She later smashed her racket on the court, resulting in a point penalty and more choice words for Ramos.

DeGeneres assured the softly-spoken Osaka, who is only 20 and admitted in the past that Williams was her childhood hero, that she was a deserved victor of the tournament.

Earlier, WTA chief Steve Simon said Ramos would have responded differently had a men's player reacted in a similar way.

The rising tennis star's victory was sadly overshadowed by a firestorm of controversy after Williams confronted chair umpire Carlos Ramos and was slapped with three code violations. "There's no equality when it comes to what the men are doing to the chair umpires and what the women are doing, and I think there has to be some consistency across the board". She was later fined $17,000 for the three code violations.

"I felt like he blew it", said King.

The American later said it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.

The USTA credited Williams for behaving with class after the match, which she lost.
