Top White House economist fact-checks Trump on GDP claim

The White House's chief economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, admitted that Donald Trump had been wrong to claim that GDP growth was higher than the unemployment rate for the first time in 100 years.

On Monday morning, Trump tweeted that "The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!"

President Trump on Monday mocked his predecessor Barack Obama for saying more than two years ago that Trump would need a "magic wand" to bring back jobs to the United States.

In fact, US GDP growth has been higher than the unemployment rate in several quarters during the last century, including, most recently, in 2006.

Despite Trump's incorrect tweet, both figures are good for Trump, with the GDP growth rate the highest in nearly four years and the unemployment rate the lowest it has been in nearly 18 years.

When asked about another Trump tweet that misquoted Obama, Hassett told reporters, "I'm not the chairman of the Council of Twitter Advisers".

But as of 3.15 pm in NY, shortly after Hassett conceded the error and hours after the claim was challenged in news stories, Trump's false tweet about GDP and unemployment remained online.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., sent a series of tweets outlining times he felt Obama was guilty of using divisive language, including his infamous 2008 line where he accused "cynical" voters of clinging to "guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them".

The White House has previously disseminated false statistics in an attempt to bolster Trump's record on jobs and the economy.

While that was good news about the economy, Lemon was struck by the president's inability to tell the truth. "That's 700,000 African-Americans that are working now that weren't working when this president took place. When President Obama left, after eight years in office, he had only created 195 000 jobs for African-Americans".

A Trump referendum: History - since the Civil War - suggests that midterm elections are nearly always a referendum on the party in power.
