Progressive upstart Ayanna Pressley defeats incumbent in Massachusetts Democratic primary

With 46 percent of precincts reporting, Pressley led the 10-term incumbent 55 percent to 45 percent when The Associated Press called the race for Massachusetts' 7th District. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT. She says Lynch didn't do enough to oppose President Donald Trump.

As FiveThirtyEight reports, a MA candidate has followed in the footsteps of the young Ocasio-Cortez with a surprising upset against a mainstream Democrat challenger on Tuesday evening.

"It seems like change is on the way", Pressley told her supporters to rousing applause Tuesday night.

A piece in Boston.com profiling Pressley's race after Ocasio-Cortez's victory this summer noted the similarities between their two campaigns.

During the campaign, Capuano touted his credentials as an "unabashed liberal", but he found himself competing with Pressley over who was the more progressive candidate. Pressley beat Michael Capuano, a 10-term incumbent, in Massachusetts' 7th District.

The Boston Globe brought up the fact that Pressley - a woman of color - represents a new generation of Democratic leaders.

Teeming opposition on the left to Trump has fuelled primary wins for insurgent, women and minority candidates in Democratic primaries ahead of November's crucial midterm elections. Her victory comes just two months after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez similarly defeated a top House leader in a primary for a NY congressional seat.

No Republican is on the ballot for the seventh congressional district race in November, so the Pressley will most likely be heading to Washington in 2019.

Pressley is poised to become the state's first black woman in Congress.

Ms Pressley argued she would bring new energy and awareness of the needs in the state's only congressional district where a majority of residents are not white.

Baker, a moderate who has been popular with voters in what is perceived as one of the nation's bluest states, will face Gonzalez, who served as secretary of administration and finance under Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick. Both contended that Baker's support among voters was soft and that his administration had failed to make significant strides in many areas, particularly the problems plaguing the Boston-area transit system known as the "T".
