No. 1 Nadal through to US Open quarterfinals

No. 1 Nadal through to US Open quarterfinals

"Seems like I was not in control of the point even when I was hitting good shots", he added.

Basilashvili is now ranked 37th, and held his own against the world number one on Sunday.

The semi-final will pit Nadal against third seed Juan Martin del Potro for the second successive Grand Slam.

Thiem was a straight sets victor over fifth-seed Kevin Anderson to set up a repeat of French Open final, where Nadal triumphed.

Rafael Nadal began his US Open quarter-final as poorly as possible, shut out in a set by a 6-0 score for only the fourth time in 282 career Grand Slam matches.

The Canadian prodigy said his game has grown in leaps since his run to the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 2017. The world No 1 and three-time victor at Flushing Meadows came within two points of victory, but Thiem wound up taking the fourth set on a tiebreak.

Del Potro was on Sunday's night schedule, facing Borna Coric.

This rematch of the French Open final in June, won by Nadal, was his first match against a top-20 opponent at the U.S. Open since 2013, when he beat then-No.

Nadal's ability to look only forward and forget what went before is one of his most important strengths and he set about turning around the match, closing in on the baseline, forcing Thiem to play one more ball and, eventually, to go for too much.

"On clay‚ I think it's one of the biggest challenges in sports to beat this guy or to compete with this guy".

"Thiem is more of a specialist on clay, and so am I, so it [playing him on hard court] is not something favorable for me", the US Open defending champion told Spanish press on Sunday following his four-set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili. The sixth seed had dropped sets in the opening two rounds against Marton Fucsovics and Tennys Sandgren, but there were no slip-ups in the third round as he saved all of the five break points he faced.

"John is a friend of mine and he deserves to be in the quarters as well", said Del Potro, who has not dropped a set so far in NY.

"But every round is a battle". Like I said, it was a close match. This time, Thiem broke first in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.

Isner was a quarter-finalist in 2011 while Ranoic has yet to make the last eight.

"There were a lot of ups and downs in the match".

"I have had three very nice experiences and seven terrible experiences", said Thiem, who has made the last-eight at a Slam other than Roland Garros for the first time.

Wawrinka had 29 winners, 28 unforced errors and was unable to break the hard-serving Raonic for the duration of the match.

The 32-year-old has certainly been pushed in his last two matches, both of which have gone four sets.

He is 4-7 against Del Potro having lost to the Argentine most recently in straight sets in the fourth round at Roland Garros this year.
