Nasa delays solar probe launch

"The primary science goals for the mission are to trace how energy and heat move through the solar corona and to explore what accelerates the solar wind as well as solar energetic particles", explained NASA. About this сообщаетAFP, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the UNN.

NASA's car-sized robe was scheduled to launch on a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida during a 65-minute launch window.

"This is where we live", said NASA solar astrophysicist Alex Young. While granting us life, the sun also has the power to disrupt spacecraft in orbit, and communications and electronics on Earth.

The new, 60-minute launch window opens at 3.31am (3.31pm Singapore time) for the Parker Solar Probe, a US$1.5 billion (S$2 billion) unmanned spacecraft that aims to get closer than any human-made object in history to the centre of our solar system.

Great knowledge about the solar wind and space storms will also help protect future space explorers when they go to the moon or Mars.

A Delta IV rocket, carrying the Parker Solar Probe, stands on launch complex 37 after the launch was scrubbed at the Kennedy Space Center, Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

It is created to withstand heat of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius, speeds of 700,000 kilometres per hour and a journey that will last seven years.

But on the back side of that heat shield, where Parker's four instruments, its flight computer and other critical systems are located, temperatures will be maintained at a relatively cool 85 degrees.

"The only way we can do that is to finally go up and touch the sun", said project scientist Nicola Fox of Johns Hopkins University.

"We are ready. We have the flawless payload".

The Parker Solar Probe has been a dream project for the scientists since decades, but the highly advanced technologies like the fault management system, solar array cooling system and the heat shield have been available recently to make this almost impossible mission a reality. "Launch teams will attempt to launch on Sunday morning", NASA said in a tweet on Saturday.

"I'm flattered naturally. That's about all I can say", said Parker.

"And last but not least, we have a white light imager that is taking images of the atmosphere right in front of the Sun".

During its historic journey, the probe will jet past Venus at speeds of 430,000 miles per hour, the equivalent of flying from NY to Tokyo in one minute.
