Activists gather in Charlottesville

Demonstrators carry banners on the campus of the University of Virginia on Saturday during a rally on the anniversary of last year's Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Dozens of advocacy groups have come together to coordinate the counter-protests, which will include a march to Lafayette Park, the location where the white supremacists have a permit to protest.

"Our role is to make sure we have a First Amendment event that goes on without any types of violence or destruction of property", Newsham said, according to CNN affiliate WTOP.

"Peace to ALL Americans!" he tweeted.

This weekend marks one year since white nationalists took to the streets of Charlottesville in a demonstration of anger that drew crowds of outraged counterprotesters, one of whom was left dead.

"Nazis and white supremacists are coming into our town after having killed individuals, after having terrorized communities like in Charlottesville", Firas Nasr, one of the event's organizers, told The Hill, " so we want to send a really clear message that we will not tolerate their hate, their bigotry, their racism, their xenophobia in our city and in our country".

Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, visited the site where her daughter was killed past year in Charlottesville, Virginia, and told a crowd of supporters that Heyer wouldn't want the attention surrounding the anniversary of the Charlottesville protests to be focused on her. A state police helicopter later crashed, killing two troopers.

In Charlottesville, at least one rally is being organized on the University of Virginia campus by a group of student activists, UVA Students United.

The "Unite the Right" rally is scheduled for Sunday in Lafayette Park, just across from the White House.

President Trump marked the anniversary of the deadly neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia with a tweet that did not single out white supremacists as responsible, while his Jewish daughter named the racist ideology and condemned it.

"You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides", Trump said.

Thousand of counterprotesters were out in force all day to mark the anniversary of a white nationalist rally a year ago in Charlottesville, Virginia, that sparked chaos and violence.

Sean Kratouil, a 17-year-old who lives in Maryland, was wearing a vest with "Antifa" on the back and said he was there to help start a movement of peaceful anti-fascists.

"There is no city better equipped to handle large-scale events, including First Amendment events, than Washington, D.C", said Metropolitan Police Department Chief Peter Newsham. They're also hoping to create an endowment so the Heather Heyer Foundation can live on for years to come.

Tensions had been building throughout the Unite the Right rally protest where white supremacists and white nationalists defended on the city.

"Our message is to let everyone know we support each other", said Maurice Cook, a co-organizer for the March for Racial Justice, which organized the counterprotest.

The preventative measures comes one year on from the harrowing violence that gripped the city one year ago.

Authorities have promised an enormous police presence to keep both sides apart and avoid the street brawls that broke out previous year in downtown Charlottesville.
