Liverpool star Dejan Lovren demands respect from critics following World Cup heroics

With a place in the final secured after a 2017-18 season in which Liverpool reached the Champions League final despite criticisms of their defensive weaknesses, Lovren feels a point had been proven about his quality as a player.

Lovren was a defensive rock as Croatia came from behind to beat England in the semi-final on Wednesday and seal a date with France in Moscow on Sunday.

And he reserved a special word for team-mate Luka Modric: 'He is, not one of, the best midfield player in the world.

Coming just seven weeks after Liverpool's defeat by Real Madrid in Kiev, Lovren has used it to hit back at his critics.

He told beIN Sport: "People said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

"Since I came in, maybe Dejan made three or four mistakes, two of them in the Tottenham game, maybe one in a Champions League game previous year".

"Without being arrogant, I think I have proved to be one of the best defenders in the world".

"I cannot imagine what will happen if Croatia were to win the World Cup, I really can't". People will never forget us.

Lovren says he remembers his mum took him and they went to the basement and can't remember how long they sat there.

"People are crying, they are happy in our country - this is something historical for us", Lovren said.

"We've had this weight on our shoulders for 20 years".

Croatia played extra-time for the third successive knockout match, having previously beaten Denmark and hosts Russian Federation on penalties.

He deserves, if we win this World Cup, the Ballon d'Or'. "Now we've got a chance to do something better on Sunday".

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly ready to bid £50 million (R873 million) for an England global who had an outstanding 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign.

"It was quite tough first half, we couldn't control the ball and they had good chances" he admitted.
