There was a time, when she was a much younger player, that Serena Williams got upset when she wasn't picked as the favorite to win Wimbledon.

Wimbledon is just her fourth tournament since she signed off the tour with the 2017 Australian Open title.

'To be perfectly honest, I haven't thought about that this tournament, ' she said after beating Julia Goerges 6-2 6-4. "I had a really tough delivery. and nearly didn't make it, to be honest", Williams said. I lost count after, like, four surgeries because I was in so many surgeries.

'I remember when I couldn't even walk to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal to be in a Wimbledon final'.

"It's like, come on guys, this is pretty awesome".

Williams isn't taking her time at Wimbledon for granted, noting in a post-game interview that she "didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back".

The 11th seed produced a stunning display of power hitting from the back of the court to leave Ostapenko a very frustrated figure.

But when the steely-eyed Williams imposed her iron will, the challenger was unable to reply, dropping five games straight to surrender the first set and fall behind in the second.

Contesting her maiden grand slam semi-final and the only player in the draw boasting more aces than Williams, Goerges made a decent enough start, holding her opening two service games to keep early pace at 2-2.

Williams will face another German, 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber, on Saturday in a rematch of the 2016 final at Wimbledon. "We played here in the final the last time I played here in the final. Yeah, I have to be ready for the match of my life". "I think that she steps up her game [against me]", Goerges said.

All of the time away pushed someone who's spent more than 300 weeks ranked No 1 down the rankings - she began Wimbledon at 181st, but was seeded 25th on account of her past success - and no one could quite be sure how the American would fare over these two weeks. "I'm just enjoying every moment", Williams added. Williams, who over the years has introduced variety into her play, threw up a lob to set-up breakpoint, which she duly converted to take a 4-2 lead.

After advancing, she summed up her feelings in brief caption along with a photo of herself celebrating during her semifinal win over Julia Gorges: "Can't help but smile".

While Kerber goes for her third Grand Slam, Williams will be going for her 24th.
