Woman declared dead after vehicle crash found alive in mortuary fridge

Ambulance company Distress Alert said she had shown "no form of life", South Africa's TimesLive website reports.

An investigation is underway after a South African woman who was pronounced dead at the scene of a vehicle crash by an ambulance company, was reportedly found alive inside a mortuary.

"When he pulled out the woman's body, he saw that she was breathing", an employee said.

The woman has since been transferred to a hospital, where she's receiving treatment.

"We need answers", a family member told the BBC, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"This did not happen because our paramedics are not properly trained".

Distress Live operations manager Gerrit Bradnick said their paramedics had followed all protocols to check for life, including looking for signs of a pulse and breathing.

The woman was certified dead at the scene of a pile-up outside Carletonville, west of Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday.

But other forensic doctors started to hear noises coming from him and realised he was still alive.

In 2016, medics declared a road accident victim in KwaZulu Natal dead. Seven years ago, a 50-year-old man woke up screaming in an Eastern Cape morgue, demanding to be taken out of "the cold place" after spending almost 24 hours there. He was found breathing the next day, but died five hours after the discovery.
