Sixty-two dead in Guatemala volcano eruption

As one of Central America's most active volcanos, it is located near the historic city and popular tourist destination of Antigua.

A Guatemala police officer attempting to escape the dooming cloud of ash rushing toward him captured the moment Volcan del Fuego erupted on Sunday, sending people fleeing by foot and auto before the thick, gray dust engulfs them.

The conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 12,346ft (3,763 meters) above sea level at its peak.

An estimated 25 people, including at least three children, were killed and almost 300 injured on Sunday in the most violent eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano in more than four decades, officials said.

Rescuers have found the bodies of several more victims of an eruption at Guatemala's Volcano of Fire, and emergency workers have pulled 10 people still alive from ash drifts and mud flows.

Soldiers are helping firefighters search for missing people after Sunday's horrific volcanic eruption in Guatemala, when torrents of superheated rock, ash and mud destroyed villages, BBC reported on Monday. A video circulating on social media showed a black cloud of ash rising from just beyond the golf club.

The eruption spewed ash over 4 miles into the sky, with volcanic debris and ash covering portions of Guatemala City and local communities surrounding the volcano.

The disaster agency said more than 3,200 people had left affected areas.

Among the fatalities were four people, including a disaster agency official, killed when lava set a house on fire in El Rodeo village, national disaster coordinator Sergio Cabanas said.

A disaster authority spokesman said a change in wind direction was to blame for the volcanic ash falling on parts of the capital.

In Guatemala City, La Aurora airport has been closed due to ash.

Garcia said that the El Rodeo village in the southern department of Escuintla is practically buried under lava, adding that the scene is “quite delicate” as the lava flow hinders authorities from getting into the area.

At least 62 bodies have been recovered, with dozens more people missing.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano - which rises to 3,763 meters (12,346 feet) - also shut down Guatemala City's worldwide airport, civil aviation said.

This is Guatemala's deadliest such event since 1902, when an eruption of the Santa Maria volcano killed thousands of people.

"We are evacuating and rescuing people and have reports of 20 wounded, six dead and disappeared", said Cabanas. The Volcano of Fire has erupted on and off for centuries, according to the USGS, and this is its second eruption this year.

A former Abbotsford woman who is based in an area of Guatemala not far from a volcano that erupted on Sunday is appealing for help for affected citizens.
