Serena Williams pulls out with injury before Maria Sharapova match

Serena Williams pulled out of the French Open on Monday with a pectoral injury just before her Round of 16 match with Maria Sharapova.

Muguruza has been playing some of her best tennis in quite some time recently and is a legit threat to win her third grand slam title if she can continue to serve the way she has in her last few matches. "We heard that she has a back injury, she had some problems yesterday in her doubles match and couldn't serve properly and that's a big problem when you have to play a big match the following day".

This was Williams' first major tournament since winning the Australian Open in January 2017, after which she took time off for the birth of her first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr.

"I'm beyond disappointed. I gave up so much from time with my daughter and time with my family all for this moment".

The scene had been set for Williams in her "superhero" catsuit to take on Russian ice queen Maria Sharapova in a fourth-round clash that had assumed top-billing. "The first time I felt it was against Görges in my last match".

The Belgian believes Williams can still add to her Grand Slam collection, though.

It was the first time the 36-year-old has withdrawn midstream from a Grand Slam singles event. I tried a lot of different tapings and support. I thought it was a ideal opportunity to see how I was going.

Sharapova turned the situation around, but Garcia got a lot of praise.

Williams, who had entered the tournament unseeded, had won her last three matches in the tournament so far.

"I realised that she went back too soon before and her body's not sort of conditioned to playing matches, just like me", she said. "I've pretty much had every (other) injury in the book". "I won't know (how serious the injury is) until I get those results".

It left the Paris crowd in Paris stunned and Williams said she will have an MRI scan today before making a final decision on whether she will be at the All England Club next month.

"It's hard", she said, per Reem Abulleil.

Her withdrawal allows Sharapova, a two-time French Open champion, to move into the quarterfinals.

"It is hard because, like I keep saying, I have given up so much to be here".

"I made a promise that if I'm not at least 60 percent or 50 percent, then I probably shouldn't play", she added.
