Iran nuclear deal: Tehran to give notice of uranium work

Iran has notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it has launched a plan to increase its uranium enrichment capacity, nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday.

"The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran is duty-bound to prepare the ground for achieving 190 thousand SWUs", Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was quoted saying by Iranian state media, referring to a measure of uranium enrichment capacity.

Signed in 2015, the pact was created to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb in return for the removal of worldwide sanctions that had impaired its economy.

"Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's declaration is a sign of hysteria and mass panic in the Iranian leadership", Lieberman said.

It says it needs more enriched uranium for its only nuclear power plant.

French officials said Macron would tell Netanyahu that the threat to increase enrichment merely highlighted the need to keep the accord to stop Iran getting an atomic weapon.

He said the global community should seek to curb Iran's ballistic missile program through a separate deal, and not by re-vamping the existing agreement.

After the US withdrawal on May 12, Iran said it would remain in the nuclear deal only if were protected from renewed USA sanctions on key sectors of its economy such as oil, in cooperation with other signatories of the pact.

During visits to Germany, France, and the United Kingdom on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday respectively, Netanyahu will attempt to convince Merkel, Macron, and May that the nuclear agreement to which their countries are party is based on the falsehood that Iran had never pursued a nuclear weapons program, and is therefore essentially invalid.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lands Monday in Germany to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel before heading in the evening to Paris for his next set of talks with President Emmanuel Macron.

On Sunday, Khamenei repeated the long-standing view from Iran that Israel is "a malignant cancerous tumour in the west Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated".

France's PSA, which manufactures Peugeot and Citroen cars, on Monday became the latest to announce its plans to pull out of Iran, where it sold almost 445,000 cars past year.

The nuclear deal and lifting of punishing nuclear related global sanctions created optimism in Iran after years of economic isolation. The Trump administration has said it will apply severe sanctions on Iran by the end of the year, including penalties against companies that trade with the country.

The EU has been trying to save the nuclear deal, after the United States withdrawal startled the bloc.

"We support Israel's right to security and have said this to Iran at all times", she said.
