Teens are using Facebook less and less

Today, roughly half (51 percent) of USA teenagers between ages 13 and 17 say they use Facebook, notably lower than the shares who use YouTube, Facebook-owned Instagram or Snapchat, showed the Pew Research Center survey results released on Thursday.

The study reportedly found that now, only 51 percent of surveyed teenagers use Facebook, which it said was a 20 percentage point drop since 2015.

Only 10 percent of teenagers who took part in the survey said they use Facebook more than any other social media app.

A mere three years later, and kids these days are ditching Facebook in favor for Instagram and Snapchat, which two-thirds say they now use. "Back then, teens' social media use mostly revolved around Facebook".

The popularity of Facebook is considerably higher among children from families with low income. The shares of teenagers who use Twitter and Tumblr are largely comparable to the shares who did so in the 2014-2015 survey. YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat are all used more by teens these days. Facebook-owned Instagram is next at 72%, followed by Snapchat at 69%. Just seven percent said that they use the popular social news aggregation site Reddit.

"The landscape of social networks has completely changed among teens in the past three years", said Monica Anderson, who led the study. At the time, 71 percent were using the service. About 30 per cent of teens said that social media has had a mostly positive impact on people their age while 24 per cent said the effect has been mostly negative.

Those data, combined with decreasing user numbers overall, can be problematic to a social platform hoping to woo more marketers to spend money to appeal to younger consumers-especially those with more disposable income. Smartphones are a almost ubiquitous accessory among teens, 95% percent of whom say they own or have access to one.

Three years ago, Facebook was the dominant social media site among USA teens, visited by 71 per cent of people in that magic, trendsetting demographic.

Pew Research's survey revealed that 95 percent of teenagers in the United States own or have access to a smartphone, and 88 percent own or have access to a desktop or laptop computer. The margin of error is 5 percentage points. Unsurprisingly, this is resulting in way more time spent online as 45 percent of those polled said they are online on a near-constant basis.
