Senior North Korean envoy delivers Kim's letter to Trump

The sides agreed to invigorate high-level visits, exchange and cooperation in different fields and hold a meeting between the top leaders of the DPRK and Russian Federation this year marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, KCNA said.

The announcement reversed an earlier decision from Trump to cancel the meeting on the North's nuclear program.

The key task ahead of the June 12 summit is to settle the agenda.

"Lavrov's meeting with Kim Jong Un was the first by a senior Russian official since the North Korean leader came to power in 2011", Lucian says, adding that the Kremlin has traditionally had close ties to leaders in Pyongyang.

Tensions between the United States of America and North Korea flared after US Vice President Mike Pence compared the North Korea situation to Libya, provoking a furious reply from the Kim regime.

After the meeting, Trump and Kim Yong Chol posed for photos on the White House lawn.

"I look forward to seeing what's in the letter", the President said as he left Joint Base Andrews for a trip to Houston.

Kim has previously made harsher comments and even threatened to launch nuclear attacks on the United States numerous times.

A top North Korean official has departed the White House after meeting with President Donald Trump amid negotiations over a high-stakes summit.

Amid all these things, Lavrov added an air of mystery to the meeting by presenting Kim Jong-un with a mysterious box, leaving everyone guessing about its contents, as per a report from Russia Today.

Pompeo spoke after meeting with Kim Yong-chol for a little more than two hours at the residence of the deputy USA ambassador to the United Nations.

After meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York, Kim delivered a letter to Trump in Washington sent by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Yet he also said a news conference that hard work remains including hurdles that may appear to be insurmountable as negotiations progress on the US demand for North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

"We will push forward to test the proposition that we can achieve that outcome", he said.

"We will continue to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula in a new era, in a new way, in a new way to find solutions to their respective problems, step by step", Kim Jong-un was quoted as saying by KCNA following Thursday talks.

He wants North Korea to "denuclearise", meaning to get rid of its nuclear arms, in return for relief from economic sanctions but the leadership in Pyongyang is believed to regard nuclear weapons as crucial to its survival and has rejected unilaterally disarming. North Korea's conciliatory response to that letter appears to have put the summit back on track.

"The people of North Korea can have a brighter future and the world can be more peaceful", he said. Kim was at the White House to deliver a letter from the North Korean leader concerning the proposed summit. Trump hosted South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week.

In 2000, Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok visited Washington and met US President Bill Clinton at the White House amid warming ties between the 1950s wartime foes. Kim needed a special waiver from the State Department to travel to NY and to Washington.
