Lake Tahoma Dam Deemed Safe, Evacuations Lifted During Tropical Depression Alberto

A North Carolina dam in danger of "imminent failure" Wednesday forced almost 2,000 people to evacuate the area, officials said.

"We need to really help as much as we can", Trindell said.

The dam at Lake Tahoma in Marion, N.C., east of Asheville, was given the all-clear on Wednesday morning, after worries of an imminent collapse triggered a mandatory evacuation until an engineer could perform a safety inspection.

Weather forecasters say the threat of flooding continues in northwestern SC and part of the coast.

Gov. Roy Cooper will declare a state of emergency Wednesday for the western part of North Carolina, the governor's office said in a statement. A tree fell on their SUV as they covered the hazardous weather, the station said.

According to earlier reports, the dam, located at a private lake in the mountains, reached "Level 1" of emergency categories, McDowell County Emergency Management officials said - meaning the dam had failed, was failing, or was about to fail, according to federal guidelines.

Heavy rain moved through parts of Long Island on Friday morning, and more was expected throughout the day, forecasters said.

Subtropical storm Alberto rolled ashore Monday afternoon in the Florida Panhandle and then weakened overnight to a depression. The emergency has been canceled and the evacuation order was rescinded, McDowell County Emergency Management said in an update.

The National Weather Service said a flood warning in McDowell remains in effect through 4:30 p.m.

Schools in the county were closed due to poor road conditions. As of 3:20 a.m. ET, no injuries or fatalities had been reported.

In the town of Tryon, near the SC border, a woman was killed last Friday after being trapped in a mudslide near her home, WLOS reported.

Many people gathered Wednesday morning along both sides of the road to watch the high water flow underneath the bridges on US 221 Business. WYFF-TV of Greenville, South Carolina, said news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer died.

In the mountains of North Carolina, two Department of Transportation workers survived a close call when their dump truck was swept away by a mudslide in McDowell County while trying to clean debris from an earlier slide.

According to the NCDOT, the pair was able to climb out through a passenger window until they were rescued.

Alberto was more of a rainstorm than a wind threat, but the National Weather Service said at least one tornado had been confirmed.
