Dinesh D'Souza Reveals What Trump Told Him During Pardon Call

The comments came after Trump announced on Twitter that he planned to pardon conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud.

D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to making an illegal campaign contribution to NY politician Wendy Long's 2012 Senate campaign, allegedly going over the contribution limit by directing other donors to give to her and repaying them.

D'Souza was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house and five years of probation. "I am very proud of the work we did with Mark Burnett Productions and Mr. Trump, who was an executive producer, on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart".

"I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated", Trump said, according to a pool report (per The New York Times). But prosecutors say he used his powers as governor to shake people down for campaign contributions, including a children's hospital.

In D'Souza's case, diGenova said, the president had good cause.

In April, Mr Trump pardoned Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who was chief of staff to former vice president Dick Cheney and was convicted in 2007 of lying in an investigation into the unmasking of a Central Intelligence Agency agent. Stewart was convicted in 2004 for obstruction of justice and lying to investigators. That prosecution was led by one of Bharara's predecessors as USA attorney, James B. Comey, who would go on to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director and also get fired by Trump.

As he left Washington to fly to Texas, Trump tweeted: "Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D'Souza today".

D'Souza was convicted in 2014 after pleading guilty to campaign finance violations.

The official said Trump has prioritized actions that have personally affected him - noting he's been particularly drawn to cases where he believes there was political motivation to the prosecutions.

A tweet sent out by Kardashian West about her visit was later retweeted by Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

D'Souza also took the opportunity to take more shots at Preet Bharara, the Obama-era USA attorney whose office oversaw the prosecution against him.

On Wednesday, Trump met with Kim Kardashian to discuss prison and sentencing reform. Trump has also pardoned former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and granted a posthumous pardon to boxer Jack Johnson.

Preet Bharara, who was US attorney for the southern district of NY at the time, wrote on Twitter, "The President has the right to pardon but the facts are these: D'Souza intentionally broke the law, voluntarily pled guilty, apologized for his conduct & the judge found no unfairness. The career prosecutors and agents did their job".

"The president is sending a blazing signal to his surrogates and associates that they will be rewarded if they stay loyal", said Lisa Gilbert, head of legislative affairs for the open government group Public Citizen. Conservative Republicans had sought a pardon for Libby for years.

D'Souza is a major Trump supporter and has created a number of right-wing propaganda films that help generate conservative conspiracy theories. But because there were pending requests at the end of the Obama administration, the total number of requests for pardons pending before Trump is 2,271 and 8,932 for commutation.
