Prominent Russian Journalist and Putin Critic Gunned Down in Kiev

The 41-year-old appeared Wednesday with the head of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) to admit that he faked death in order to foil a very real plot to murder him.

"Special apologies to my wife, Olechka; there was no other option", Babchenko said.

Babchenko's wife, he wrote, had called to say that the journalist had been shot in their home and was taken to the hospital.

His memoir, One Soldier's War, chronicled his experiences of the conflict, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands on both sides.

He has contributed to a number of media outlets including top opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta and is an avid blogger, accusing Russian authorities of killing Kremlin critics and unleashing wars in Ukraine, Syria and elsewhere.

Mr Babchenko said that the plan had been prepared for two months. Vigils and tributes to Babchenko popped up in Moscow, just moments before he dramatically re-appeared.

Mr Babchenko, one of Russia's best-known war reporters, spoke and wrote a year ago about leaving the country because of repeated threats that he and his family would be harmed.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko blamed Moscow for wanting to kill Babchenko, and congratulated his country's security services for becoming stronger in the face of "Russian aggression".

"I'm still alive", Babchenko told a group of fellow reporters.

A number of Kremlin critics have been killed in Ukraine in recent years, with one gunned down on a Kiev street in broad daylight and another whose auto exploded. Prominent Russians to have been murdered in Kiev include journalist Pavel Sheremet, who was killed in a vehicle bomb in 2016, and ex-Russian lawmaker Denis Voronenkov, who was shot dead in 2017.

The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement it was happy Babchenko was alive and that the staged murder had a "propagandistic effect", according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

Ukrainian authorities said the goal of the staged murder was to catch the people who'd actually been planning to kill Babchenko.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman wrote on Facebook that he was "sure the Russian totalitarian machine had not forgiven" Babchenko "his honesty and principles".

The journalist was 19 when he fought with the Russian army in Chechnya in the 1990s. Babchenko had left Russian Federation for Ukraine in February 2017 because he feared for his life.

Mr Babchenko had claimed that while living in Russian Federation his home address was published online, and that threats were made by phone, email and social media.

Moscow, which has been at odds with Kiev since a 2014 popular revolt in Ukraine that toppled a Russian-backed government in favour of a pro-Western one, described such allegations as part of an anti-Russian smear campaign. The hoax was part of an investigation into the threats against the Kremlin critic.
