Trump, Abe say 'imperative' to dismantle N. Korean weapons

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted, "Stay focused".

CNN global affairs analyst Joseph Yun said a joint declaration of some sort on June 12 was far more likely, given the short time period to iron out differences before Mr Trump and Mr Kim meet. Sung Kim is a former US ambassador to South Korea and was a top negotiator with North Korea in past nuclear talks.

"He (Kim) also expressed his intention to put an end to the history of war and confrontation through the success of the North-US summit and to co-operate for peace and prosperity", Mr Moon told reporters. The White House National Security Council tells NPR's Scott Horsley that the USA delegation in Panmunjom is distinct from the team led by Hagin. The meetings are expected to go through Monday and Tuesday, the newspaper reported, citing an unnamed person familiar with the arrangements.

On Monday, the president discussed the summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Monday morning, CNN reported.

The White House has not responded to VOA queries about the Trump-Abe discussion.

On Sunday, current USA ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim led a team to the northern side of the "Unification House" along the DMZ for talks on North Korea's nuclear program.

According to reporting from NPR's Elise Hu, the Saturday meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas happened on Kim's request.

The summit is expected to take place in Singapore on June 12.

"A lot of people are working on it", Trump said.

Moon Jae-in meets with Kim Jong Un on May 26. North Korea, which cancelled the talks earlier this month in a sign of reemerging tensions, said the two leaders agreed to "meet frequently in the future". Another U.S. delegation was in Singapore to work on logistics.

With the landmark US-North Korea summit moving along "very nicely" according to US President Donald Trump, Singaporeans were surprised to see Kim Jong Un gamely posing for pictures in the heart of Marina Bay yesterday, armed with a durian and a box of chicken rice.

Howard X also made an appearance as Kim at the Winter Olympics in Gangneung in South Korea in February, bewildering North Korean cheerleaders who initially thought their leader had walked into a hockey stadium.

The maximum pressure effort through economic sanctions have helped facilitate North Korea's interest in denuclearization as much as the threat of force, Chang, author of "Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes on the World", told guest host Leland Vittert.

South Korea's President Moon Jae-in said on Monday there could be more impromptu talks with North Korea including summits between pre-arranged dialogue. "Based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting", Trump wrote. Since taking power a year ago, Moon has sought to facilitate dialogue between Trump and Kim to avoid the possibility of a devastating military conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

The general has always been a right hand man to North Korea's leader, playing a front-seat role during recent rounds of diplomacy aimed at ending the nuclear stalemate on the Korean peninsula. "They are going to be best friends right after this meeting".

The Heritage Foundation's Bruce Klingner, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst on the Koreas, tells NPR's Elise Hu that the USA and North Korea still are not aligned on a definition of denuclearization.

The U.S. has frequently called for the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible" dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Some U.S. officials have talked about a comprehensive one-shot deal in which North Korea fully eliminates its nukes first and receives rewards later.

The news of an American delegation in the North was later confirmed by the U.S. State Department.

"I miss Trump, I'm already here in Singapore waiting for him to turn up", he said.

While admitting this option remained unlikely, Lord Hague stated Kim could agree to this plan if a formal treaty were ratified in the US Senate to provide a "security guarantee".
