Not so, say White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley and director of strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp.

Others weigh in: presidential advisor Ivanka Trump claims it's laurel, while Vice President Mike Pence asks, "Who's yanny?"

A straw poll carried out among staff in AFP's Washington bureau counted 17 for Yanny, and 14 for Laurel. Sanders responds, "Clearly you're getting your information from CNN because that's fake news".

The video ends with a cameo by President Trump who delivers the punchline. In fact, I began to wonder how in the world anyone could hear "Laurel".
