So. Indiana police escort son of fallen officer to school

When it came time for 5-year-old Dakota Pitts to go back to school, he asked his mom if one of his dad's friends could drive him to school in his dad's police auto on his first day back.

For his first day back to school, Dakota asked if one of his dad's friends could drive him in his dad's police vehicle.

Les Ham, Terre Haute Police Department detective, said: "Dakota asked his mom if one of his dad's friends could take him to school, so she kind of reached out to Rob's friends and family".

WGNTV reports that Pitt's son, Dakota, returned back to school Monday in touching fashion.

The 16-year police vet was fatally shot by a 21-year-old suspect while responding to a call last week.

Seventy Terre Haute Police Officers and Vigo County Sheriff's Deputies waited for 5-year-old Dakota Pitts when he arrived at school.

Several of the officers came forward and presented Dakota with small tokens such as a T-shirt and a police patch.

He says he simply wants to show his support and it's not the first time he's seen how much community support means to the officers.
