Nigeria says will prevent Ebola spread from DR Congo

Nigeria's government this week ordered that travellers from DR Congo should be screened as an additional security measure after the fresh outbreak was confirmed, but the request was rejected by Nigeria's health workers' unions, who have been striking since April 18 over pay and conditions.

Health experts credit an awareness of the disease among the population and local medical staff's experience treating for past successes containing its spread. However, the organisation said it is working with neighboring countries on border surveillance and preparedness for possible outbreaks.

Congo's vast, remote geography also gives it an advantage, as outbreaks are often localised and relatively easy to isolate.

An Ebola outbreak has been declared in the north-west of the Democratic Republic Congo.

Matches against the most endangered nations such as Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone were all cancelled at the time and fans who attended Nigeria's match against DR Congo that year underwent temperature checks.

"This advance team brought the first batches of equipment, mostly containing rapid diagnostic tests for the Ebola virus and laser thermometers", the Health Ministry statement said.

According to Reuters, the main hospital in Bikoro has received a new suspected Ebola case with the hospital's director confirming that on Friday. It can also spread to people who encounter the bodily fluids or viscera of infected primates or bats, such as when someone prepares these animals for food.

At least 17 people have died around the village near the northwestern town of Bikoro where the virus was detected this week, health officials said.

Congo's health ministry on Tuesday, May 8, described the fresh outbreak as a "public health emergency with global impact".

The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine was in development for many years before the 2014 outbreak, but no one paid for clinical trials to prove it worked.

The World Health Organization (WHO), Médecins Sans Frontières, and Provincial Division of Health have traveled to Bikoro in an effort to stem the outbreak.

Signs and symptoms which include things like fever, headache, muscular pain, tiredness, nausea, nausea, abdominal pain along with nervousness can begin two to 21 days after vulnerability.

Salama emphasized that the vaccination operation for Ebola is far more complex than that for orally-administered polio vaccine.

During the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, there were four reported cases of the Ebola virus reaching the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The last death in the cluster was reported in February, and so far investigators haven't turned up an epidemiologic links between the previous and current outbreaks.
