Five most wanted leaders of ISIS taken prisoner

In a tweet this afternoon, the United States leader said: "Five Most Wanted leaders of ISIS just captured!" Trump wrote in a post on Twitter, providing no further details.

Iraqi agents used the Telegram messaging app on Eithawi's mobile phone to lure other Islamic State commanders to cross the border from Syria into Iraq, where they were captured, Hashimi said.

The five men are not believed to include ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi.

Baghdadi is thought to be hiding out near the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Saddam al-Jammel, a Syrian who had headed the IS operations near the eastern Syrian town of Deir al-Zour, and Abu Abdel al-Haq, an Iraqi who had been the group's head of internal security, were two of the terrorists captured, The Times reported. The capture of all five was announced on Iraqi state TV on Wednesday.

Following the airstrike, the paper reports, USA and Iraqi agents persuaded al-Ithawi to help set a trap and convince the other ISIS leaders to leave Syria and enter Iraq.

Apart from Eithawi and Jamal, the operation captured three field commanders: Syrian Mohamed al-Qadeer and two Iraqis, Omar al-Karbouli and Essam al-Zawbai, Hashimi said.

Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway, said the USA credited Iraqi security forces with the militants' capture "on the Iraq-Syria border". The Iraqi air force has carried out several airstrikes since previous year against ISIS positions in Syrian territory.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: "His movements are discreet and he never travels in a convoy".

On April 30, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pledged to continue airstrikes on Daesh positions and headquarters inside neighboring Syria but stressed that Baghdad would not infringe upon the sovereignty of the Damascus government. But the militants still pose a threat along the border with Syria and have continued to carry out ambushes, killings and bombings across Iraq.

On December 9, 2017, Abadi declared the end of military operations against Daesh in Iraq.
