AP corrects earlier report that NRA banned guns at Pence speech

"Due to the attendance of the Vice President of the United States, the U.S. Secret Service will be responsible for event security at the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum", the NRA's statement to attendees reads.

Parkland survivors criticized the National Rifle Association after it banned guns from Vice President Mike Pence's upcoming speech at the organization's annual convention later this week.

Much has changed in the American debate about guns since the last NRA convention in Texas in 2013, the largest in recent memory, which drew more than 81,000 people.

Trump's speech to the NRA will mark another return appearance before a group that was one of his earliest and most ardent supporters.

Meanwhile, since the Parkland shooting, the "NRA posts biggest fundraising haul in almost 20 years". It will be the fourth time Trump addresses the NRA - and he is the first president to have spoken to the group while in office.

The NRA, along with President Donald Trump, has called for arming teachers to deter future school shootings.

Despite these facts, a number of major media outlets described the situation as an NRA-instituted ban on gun carry at the Pence speech or even at the entire convention.

The NRA Leadership Conference will take place in Dallas at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center from Friday to Sunday.

"Because of the attendance of the Vice President of america, the U.S. Secret Service can be liable for occasion safety on the..." More than 80,000 people are expected to attend.

'It's ironic that they feelthey need to ban guns to protect themselves.'

The weapons ban was mocked on Twitter, including by Fred Guttenberg, father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was killed in the Parkland shooting. County Judge Clay Jenkins is hosting a forum Thursday for local students to "voice their concerns" about the convention. "Am I missing something?" he tweeted.

The NRA did not respond to a request for comment.

Matt Deitsch, who graduated from the Parkland school in 2016 and is the chief strategist for the March for Our Lives protest, expressed similar skepticism. Deitsch wrote. "Can someone explain this to me?"

Cameron Kasky, a survivor of the Parkland shooting, posted a screenshot of the NRA's firearm rule to Twitter, saying "The NRA has evolved into such a hilarious parody of itself".

Gun enthusiasts are displeased about the prohibition. At Texas CHL Forum, a message board for gun owners, commenters aired their frustrations.

"He chose to be in the wrong room with the wrong audience, especially if he's looking for votes and support", Oliver said. "Don't complain about your eroding credibility and other people calling you "faux information" while you publish issues like this", she wrote. No excuses for this.

"We're expecting in the thousands and we're expecting our numbers to go up with him coming to town", Alexander said of Trump. "The eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end".
