Terrifying moment man is attacked by lion in front of screaming onlookers

A friend of the man - identified only as Mike - said Hodge and the park owner were investigating an odd odour in the lion's enclosure when the animal pounced, according to the Sun.

The owner of a private game reserve near Thabazimbi in Limpopo has been hospitalised after being mauled by one of his lions.

Hodge and his wife started off raising lions in 2003 on a farm about 18 miles from Thabazimbi.

The graphic and potentially upsetting footage, which can be viewed below, shows the lion apparently being led away from the enclosure's entrance by a park worker on the other side of a wire fence, when the elderly man opens a door and enters. Unfortunately, as he wasn't fast enough, the lion caught hold of him and dragged him away.

Hodge, who left the United Kingdom for South Africa with his wife Chrissy in 1999, is believed to have suffered neck and jaw injuries stemming from the altercation.

'He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong'.

Marakele Predator Centre is situated 9 Km's out of the town of THABAZIMBI in the LIMPOPO region of the bushveld, surrounded by the attractive Waterberg Mountains.

The site tells of guests afforded the ability to stay in safari tents where each night they 'will be able to hear the lions roar, hyenas laugh, and jackals calling'.

A video of the incident was also shot by onlookers, where Hodge could be first seen entering the animal's enclosure and then trying to run away from it.

One viewer questioned why he had ventured so close to the big cat.

Wrote a commentator, 'Why was he inside the enclosure?

Another commented on how the lion was just acting according to its animal instinct. When the lion was finished with him, Hodge lay motionless on the ground.

'Set him free, where he deserves to be'.

Added another commentator, 'We have no right to lock up any animal! The attack is now being investigated and it is not immediately clear what caused the animal to snap.

While another posited, 'Hopefully everyone boycotts this place, the lion should not have been put down'.
