Significance of Labour Day: Then and now

The day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the global labour movement every year on 1 May, an ancient European spring festival.

On 3 May 1886 police fired into a crowd of striking workers in Chicago, killing four and wounding many.

Millions of people celebrate May 1 as a day devoted to the rights of workers and the working class.

Today, a team of "Doodlers" - illustrators, graphic designers, animators and artists - work on the Google Doodles. The need for more stringent labour laws in India can be easily justified by the Global Rights Index of 2017 that ranks India as one of the worst countries for working people. "Without it, nothing can be accomplished."?

Google on Tuesday dedicated its creative doodle to mark the International Labour Day.

The red flag that popularly represents the working class was also raised for the first time in India on this day. However, in Northern Europe, Walpurgis Night is celebrated on a preceding night and this holiday merges with the Labour Day in some countries. With this decision, May 1 has been celebrated as the World Labour Day since 1890. The US, however, celebrates Labour Day on the first Monday of September.

The origins of Labour Day date back to the late 19th century, when the trade union and labour movements were growing in the US.

Three years later, in a first gathering of the labour organisation Second International in Paris, international demonstrations were planned for the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago strikes.

Meanwhile, thousands of people were taking part in officially-sanctioned May 1 events in the Istanbul district of Maltepe at a vast meeting area.

Demonstrators are also protesting the federal response to Hurricane Maria and the Puerto Rican government's financial mismanagement of a $70 billion debt, resulting in a diaspora of 450,000 Puerto Ricans migrating to the United States.

They are also asking the government to stop foreign hiring and increase employment opportunities for local workers.

International Workers' Day is a public holiday in many countries, though activities are restricted in some places, sometimes leading to confrontations.
