Ashley Judd tells fellow sexual assault survivors 'healing is our birthright'

Ashley Judd has sued disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein for what the actress says was irreparable damage to her career.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, Judd revealed she felt something "unseen" holding back her career for years, but only connected the dots following the dozens of sexual misconduct accusations against Weinstein. "It's time that Mr. Weinstein be held accountable for that conduct and for the ways in which he's damaged careers".

Actress Ashley Judd is suing Weinstein for defamation, harassment and unfair business practices.

The statement did not address Judd's allegations that she was sexually harassed by Weinstein. (Ms. Sorvino has also accused Mr. Weinstein of harassment.) Although the "Lord of the Rings" movies were started at Miramax, a boutique studio run by Mr. Weinstein and then owned by Disney, the project moved to New Line Cinema before filming started.

He has apologised for his past behaviour but denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.

Speaking with the now-Pulitzer Prize winning team at the New York Times, Judd described an incident in the '90s where Weinstein asked to massage him in a hotel room and pressured her to watch him shower during a meeting.

She said: "For me, success would mean when people say "women, ' they mean all women".

"We look forward to a vigorous defense of these claims", Weinstein's statement added.

Instead, the statement said, Weinstein "championed" Judd's work and "repeatedly approved her casting for two of his movies" - "Frida" in 2002 starring Salma Hayek, and "Crossing Over" with Harrison Ford in 2009.

"No person - in whatever job, in whatever industry - should have to forfeit professional aspirations and the right to earn a living to the abusive whims of the powerful", Judd's suit says.

"With those baseless smears, Weinstein succeeded in blacklisting Ms. Judd and destroying her ability to work on what became a multibillion-dollar franchise with 17 Academy Award wins and many more nominations", wrote Judd's Gibson Dunn lawyers, including Theodore Boutrous Jr.

Sorvino also responded to Jackson's comments, calling it "confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure".
