Mulvaney's Advice to Bankers: Up Campaign Donations to Diminish Consumer Watchdog

Sen. Sherrod BrownSherrod Campbell BrownSenator offers new details on allegations against VA nominee Trump's nominee for the VA is on the ropes Trump backs Renacci in Ohio Senate race MORE (D-Ohio) said Mulvaney should step down as Office of Management and Budget director and acting chief of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after his Tuesday comments before a crowd of bankers. On Tuesday, he admitted that, as a Congressman, he only met with lobbyists who gave him money - almost 90% of which come from banks and other businesses. Mulvaney accepted almost $63,000 in campaign donations from payday lenders during his time in Congress, but Mulvaney claims those donations do not pose a conflict of interest. "If you came from back home and sat in my lobby, I would talk to you without exception, regardless of the financial contributions".

"We had a hierarchy in my office in Congress", Mulvaney told the audience at an American Bankers Association conference.

Earlier this year, Mulvaney ended the CFPB's investigation into a South Carolina-based lender, World Acceptance Corporation, that donated $4,500 to Mulvaney's congressional campaigns, The Times reported.

Well, how utterly noble of him to talk to the people he represented without asking them to pay up first. "It's more important than lobbyists and it's more important than money". That Mulvaney would engage in this behavior is not particularly surprising, but the fact that he so openly admits to it, in front of an industry group he is supposed to regulate, shows a striking level of disregard for even the appearance of basic propriety.
