Legendary boxer, Jack Johnson, could get pardon from Trump in historic case

".I am considering a Full Pardon!". But the case has since been highlighted as an example of the government bringing down a man who had risen above the Jim Crow laws. Jess Myron Willard was capable of beating Johnson in Havana, Cuba, in April 1915 in the 26th round, the New York Post reported.

President Trump looks set to grant a posthumous pardon to a champion black boxer after learning - thanks to Sylvester Stallone - how his career was wrecked by racism. He was convicted in 1913 via a purported violation of the Mann Act after he crossed state lines with his white girlfriend.

But his relationships with white women made him a notorious man at the time.

Critics say the Mann Act, which was meant to prevent human trafficking, was used to punish African-Americans and political dissenters.

Two months into his sentence, in an open-air ring at Leavenworth Penitentiary, Johnson took part in his first bout for seven years, knocking out two fellow inmates in quick succession.

In 1920, Johnson turned himself over to United States authorities at the Mexican border and served 10 months in prison.

After his release, Johnson reportedly continued fighting well into his sixties but was killed in a auto crash in 1946 at the age of 68. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) in petitioning Barack Obama for that, it appears Trump has it in on his mind after a phone call with the "Rocky" and "Rambo" actor.

All of that aside, it is otherwise notable that Stallone responded to reports in 2016 that then-President-elect Donald Trump was considering him for the position of National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) chairman by turning that down.

Lawmakers have been trying to pardon Johnson for years.

Posthumous pardons are rare, but not unprecedented. John McCain of Arizona and Rep. Peter King of NY wrote in a letter to Obama in 2009.

Sen. Cory Booker also joined McCain, King and Rep. Gregory Meeks to introduce a resolution to get Johnson a pardon in March of 2017. "I hope President Trump will seize the opportunity before him to right this historical wrong and restore a great athlete's legacy".

"It's been frustrating", she said, to wait all these years only to be disappointed time and time again.
