Ramaphosa: 'Winnie Madikizela-Mandela lived for the African people'

Senior military officials carrying the coffin of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela into Orlando Stadium in Soweto for a funeral ceremony on April 14, 2018.

She added that "praising her now that she is gone shows what hypocrites you are".

Speaking about her friend, the 47-year-old said: 'We are lucky to have witnessed her greatness, her courage, her fearlessness and her strength.

Mandela, who died in Johannesburg aged 81 on April 2 after a long illness, was celebrated for keeping her husband Nelson Mandela's dream of a non-racial South Africa alive during his 27-year imprisonment. Zenani was overcome with emotions during the visit by the ANC top leadership prior to her burial.

The United Nations staged a special memorial sitting at its NY headquarters on Friday to mark her passing. She grew to become involved with a band of men after Madikizela-Mandela returned in exile. He said he would request the ANC to confer its highest honour on her.

Much of the stadium is filled with supporters of the ruling African National Congress party, the former liberation movement that Madikizela-Mandela had a rocky relationship with in recent years. Madikizela-Mandela denied any knowledge of any killings. "Loudly and without apology, she spoke truth to power", he said.

Ramaphosa, who had been promised to be taken to Marikana by Madikizela-Mandela to formally apologise to the widows of the 34 miners who were killed, said that although she passed on before it could happen, he would honour her wishes.

Ramaphosa has not set foot in Marikana since 34 people, mostly mine workers, were shot dead by police on August 16, 2012, during a violent wildcat strike over wages at Lonmin's platinum mine, of which Ramaphosa was a non-executive director at the time. "If you disrespect President Ramaphosa, you're disrespecting Mama Winnie". We were still supposed to do a lot of things together. We heard you, but which ANC do we go to.

There were loud cheers when the radical Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema paid tribute to Mrs Madikizela-Mandela.

"Mama Winnie's life was about service, service to her people".

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy. Her reputation was tainted by accusations of human rights violations that seemed sometimes at odds with Mandela's fight for inclusiveness. "When it was safe to do so, the men took over again and the women were relegated to a supporting role", Ramaphosa said. I think their actions are actions of extreme cruelty, because they robbed my mother of her rightful legacy during her lifetime. "Until the end Mama (Mother) Winnie raised her voice in support of meaningful transformation in the South African society". Mam' Winnie was universal and timeless.

"We want to let you know that my mother despite all the lies smeared against her was ready to challenge the lies but time did not allow." .

It shocked South Africans to learn of the apartheid government's sophisticated misinformation and propaganda operations, known as Stratcom.

"Just as Mam' Winnie has united us in sorrow, let us honour her memory by uniting in common goal". It is hard to accept that she is no longer with us. "Just as Mam' (mother) Winnie has united us in sorrow, let us honor her memory by uniting in common objective", said Ramaphosa.

"The pain inflicted on her lives forever even after her death".
