Harvey, Maria and others retired as hurricane names - USA agency

When the 2017 list of names returns for the 2023 hurricane season, Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate will be replaced with Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel.

This is the second-most names ever retired in a single year.

With the four new retirees, there have been 86 names pulled from the Atlantic list since 1953, when storms began to be named.

Hurricane season is around the corner, with forecasters predicting 3-5 major hurricanes for the USA this year.

The names of the four hurricanes were retired Thursday by the World Meteorological Organization, the agency which names storms in different ocean basins around the world.

Hurricane Irma will never impact Jacksonville again.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center is a member of the World Meteorological Organization's Region IV Hurricane Committee, and is responsible for issuing tropical cyclone forecasts and warnings for both the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins.

Hurricane Irma was a category 5 storm that made landfall at seven locations along the Carribbean and Florida.

The 2005 season holds the record for the most names retired because of the devastation they caused. Irma caused 44 deaths, including seven in the U.S. Hundreds more were injured preparing for the storm, during it or in its aftermath.

Harvey, which dumped up to five feet (1.52 m) of rain on southeast Texas, and Maria, which ravaged Puerto Rico and Dominica, are the second- and third-costliest storms in US history, NOAA said. 65 are dead in Puerto Rico. Significant rainfall impacted Central America and 44 deaths were reported as a result. At least nine other people are missing in the region.
