Carles Puigdemont released on bail by German court

Carles Puigdemont released on bail by German court

It wasn't immediately clear when Puigdemont would be released.

A tweet posted from Puigdemont's account late Thursday read: "See you tomorrow".

He has been in self-imposed exile from Spain since late past year - and was arrested on foot of a European Arrest Warrant by German authorities at the Danish border last month.

Puigdemont was caught on the entry of Germany from Denmark on March 25 en route to his residence in Belgium. He has been held at a prison in Neumuenster.

Mr Puigdemont faces charges of sedition, rebellion and misappropriation of public funds in Spain as a result of his role in last year's Catalan banned independence referendum.

That made his actions not punishable under German law, the judges said, rejecting prosecutors' argument that the Spanish "rebellion" charge was similar enough to Germany's "high treason" statute to justify an extradition.

The separatists' maneuvers come after a string of setbacks for their ambitions since October, with Spanish courts blocking moves toward independence and bringing charges against the movement's leaders.

"Again a signal has been sent to Spain's justice system that they are going the wrong way", he told Belgium's VRT network.

The charge of misuse of public funds remains possible as grounds for extradition, the judges said, but the more serious charge of rebellion was ruled inadmissible as German law deems violence necessary for such an offence to have been committed. They said there was no indication he could be "exposed to the danger of political persecution".

"There is a risk of flight", the court found in its explanation of its decision to grant bail.

The Spanish government says it can't assess the decision by a German court to release on bail the former Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont until it has more details about the ruling - but is vowing to respect it.

"We always said that we were not violent".

Puigdemont had proposed Sanchez - his No. 2 in the Together for Catalonia party - last month, but Spain's Supreme Court refused to free him to attend a parliamentary session.

"That is not the case here", the court said in a statement.

The Spanish government's quelling of the October 1 independence referendum drew global condemnation and outrage, with footage of national police officers and members of the Civil Guardia seizing ballot boxes and violently dispersing voters going viral on social media.
