Streaming service launching April 12

The $4.99-per-month service touted since November and powered by BAMTech - the technology spinoff of Major League Baseball Advanced Media for which Disney outlaid $2.58 billion for a 75-percent stake - will also be carried through a reimagined ESPN app and offer a Netflix-like aggregation of sports. As promised, the platform will offer a diverse lineup of live sports, original content, and a library of ESPN branded content, including their award-winning 30 for 30 documentary films.

The service will consist of "hundreds of MLB, NHL, MLS games, thousands of college sports events, Top Rank Boxing, PGA Tour golf, Grand Slam tennis and much more", an ESPN news release reads.

Sports fans finally know what ESPN's long-awaited subscription service, ESPN+, has to offer. Ask James Pitaro, ESPN President and Co-Chair, of Disney Media Networks (because, yes, Disney owns everything on your screen): "With ESPN+, fans have access to thousands more live games, world class original programs and on-demand sports content, all at a great price..."

Cable subscribers can still watch that content on the ESPN app, which is being redesigned to seamlessly intergrate the new offerings.

ESPN+ is Disney's first direct-to-customer service, which could mean that company wants to see how this does before rolling out a Disney subscription-based streaming in 2019. It will feature a selection of sporting events and special features not available on the free app.

ESPN+ will launch on April 12 and will be a subscription platform built in to the ESPN app.

While ESPN's current slate of live sports isn't making the move over to ESPN+, there are still a lot of games left over to fit on the streaming service.

- MLB - ESPN+ will feature an ESPN+ MLB game each day, seven days per week, throughout the MLB regular season - more than 180 games that will include every MLB team. We'll let you know more as we do - especially about everything related specifically to our local squads. ESPN+ will also have hundreds of games this fall from soccer, volleyball, and field hockey as the 2018-19 academic year gets under way. To put it simply: ESPN+ will not include ESPN. The catch here is that this will begin during the 2018-19 National Hockey League season. The real value in ESPN+ looks to be for fans of less mainstream sports like Major League Soccer, Boxing, and college sports from smaller athletic conferences.

If that's not enough, fans will also get over 100 days of live golf from over 31 PGA Tour events, hundreds of Grand Slam Tennis matches, and hundreds of global rugby and cricket matches.
