London Overtakes US With High Murder Rate

Meanwhile, in recent years London has seen a significant rise in murders.

The murder rate in London over the past two months exceeded New York City's for the first time in modern history, according to reports.

Fifteen people were murdered in London during February, compared to 14 in NY, according to police figures.

March will likely continue the trend as London had 22 killings estimated in the capital versus 21 in NY.

Last night alone, a 17-year-old girl in Tottenham was killed after a shooting incident, while a boy, 16, is now fighting for his life after a separate shooting just kilometres away.

Fight for Peace charity head of programmes Jacob Whittingham told the paper: "What's scary about London is the randomness of the crime".

She has formed a new 100-strong task force to combat violent crime with another 600 officers "raising awareness" in schools.

London remains one of the safest cities in the world.

The shootings come amid concerns over rising violent crime in the capital. Some 15 people were murdered in London to 14 in NY, and in March the numbers were 22 and 21, respectively. For March, 22 murders were investigated in London, with 21 reports in NY.

A massive decline in crime has helped to transform New York City: In 1990, 2,245 people were murdered.

By 1998, the number of murders had dropped to 629, with a slight uptick to 649 in 2001. Why is London seeing such an increase while NY has seen a significant decrease? While the United Kingdom has essentially banned private ownership of firearms, and NYC does have strict gun-control laws, the total number of law-abiding American citizens who own firearms has steadily increased across the US since the 1990s.

What makes this notable is that the weapon most often employed in these British murders is a knife.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said late a year ago that the declining crime figures in New York City can be attributed to "precision" policing against key offenders, initiatives that target gangs, and aggressive investigations into crimes committed with guns.
