Uber "reaches settlement" with family of killed pedestrian

The chief executive of self-driving rival Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo said his company's vehicles would have avoided the 18 March accident.

The suspension and the expiration of the permit comes in the wake of a fatal crash in Tempe, Arizona in which 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg died after being hit by a self-driving vehicle operated by Uber. They show that Ducey's staff worked closely with the company as it began experimenting with autonomous vehicles that the company began testing on public roads in August 2016 without informing the public.

Though the ride share company is now slogging through the aftermath of the fatal self-driving Uber vehicle crash, it might also want to initiate a side project of putting its drivers through a basic GPS/navigation training system. Meanwhile, Uber said that it had suspended testing of its self-driving cars in the cities of Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco in the United States and Toronto in Canada.

The company last week suspended its autonomous driving tests in all cities after a fatal collision in Arizona. The incident is under investigation by local police and federal safety officials who have offered few details, including whether Uber's decision to scale back its sensors is under review.

In December 2016, after California revoked the registration of Uber's 16 self-driving test cars, the company transported the cars to Arizona, where Ducey publicly welcomed them. "Improving public safety has always been the emphasis of Arizona's approach to autonomous vehicle testing, and my expectation is that public safety is also the top priority for all who operate this technology in the state of Arizona", Ducey said in his letter to Khosrowshahi. The report did not identify the family members, but the law firm representing them said there will be no further comment.

According to a report from the official Xinhua news agency on Wednesday, the test was recently completed in Xiongan, a new development zone created previous year under direct orders from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Beijing-based Baidu has been tasked by the Chinese government to lead the country's development in driverless auto technology, as China is bolsters its position in the global race for autonomous vehicles.

The company's CEO, Amnon Shashua, has noted that even the basic building blocks of autonomous systems - the ability to detect and classify objects - remain challenging tasks. "We believe it will continue to grow as we use our network and technology to transform the trucking industry". "It was well known that companies were operating self-driving cars".

The email exchanges fill in the gaps between what Ducey was saying publicly since taking office in early 2015 and what was happening behind the scenes as his administration helped Uber set up shop in the state and then launch its driverless auto testing program.

Uber claims the new app will match customers heading in similar directions, saving them up to 50 per cent on a regular UberX ride. Three weeks ago, it started a free robot-taxi service for those employees to commute to and from work.
