Microsoft unveils biggest reshuffle in years; Myerson exits

With change comes transition, and one transition we have been planning for is for Terry Myerson to pursue his next chapter outside Microsoft. The new setup aims to leverage Microsoft's strongest businesses, like its Azure cloud service and Office 365 subscription software, while Windows gets deemphasized. The RS5 would be the last Redstone release as the software giant will release new versions of Windows 10 with a name referring to the release date.

Microsoft's Terry Myerson who has been leading Microsoft's efforts in transforming Windows from a slow to update OS into a more regularly updated product to keep Windows fresh is out after 21 years of service. To alleviate negative consequences of the technology Nadella and Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith have formed a new AI and Ethics in Engineering and Research group at the company. Microsoft wouldn't say how many people work on AI + Research today.

What this ultimately means for Microsoft and Windows remains to be seen. The tool is aimed at two groups: distribution owners (so they can produce a bundle to ship through the Microsoft Store) and developers (so they can create custom distributions and sideload them onto their development systems). Twitter is clearly shifting its Windows focus towards PWAs, as the existing store app will transform into a PWA once the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update is available.

A team led by Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman, who helped create company's HoloLens headset, will lead development of Azure's speech, vision and other machine perception services along with mixed reality technologies.

A new team focused on Experiences and Devices will be lead by Rajesh Jha, Microsoft Executive Vice President of the Office Product Group, while another new team, lead by Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of the Cloud Enterprise Group, will be focussing on the company's Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform.

Windows: Joe Belfiore will continue leading our Windows experiences and will drive Windows innovation in partnership with the PC and device ecosystem. Kudo Tsunoda is continuing to spearhead the NEXT (New Experiences and Technology) business, which had its own reorg earlier this year. The thinking is by bringing Windows client, server, and cloud all together, Microsoft will be able to better build a common infrastructure and application model across all flavors of Windows.
