Saudi Arabia's crown prince meets Trump

Mr Trump welcomed Mohammed bin Salman to the White House for their first meeting since he became crown prince of Saudi Arabia last summer.

Noting that Saudi Arabia is a key partner and an all-time friend of the U.S., the official said for Trump, his visit to the Kingdom was certainly one was of the high points of his first year in office.

Afterward, the U.S President held two charts and started enumerating the deals Saudi Arabia signed with the United States, which range from ships to missile defense to planes and fighting vehicles.

Also present at the meeting was Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and Middle East envoy, who has already forged close ties with the Saudi Crown Prince.

Just as Trump followed his time in Riyadh with stops in Israel, Italy and Belgium, the crown prince will spend more than two weeks talking to members of Congress and meeting Americans in Boston, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. They will also discuss bilateral issues, including Saudi investment in America's infrastructure and defence trade, the senior administration official said on condition of anonymity.

Also high on the agenda in the White House talks was confronting Iran, a country Trump has repeatedly criticized for its expansionist policies in the Middle East. "The deal is coming up in one month and we'll see what happens".

He gave CBS's 60 Minutes an interview, which aired on Sunday, doing his best to come off as a progressive leader, and Saudi officials have been doing the rounds with USA media to emphasize Saudi Arabia's disdain for Iran, its chief rival in the region.

In a major Saudi shakeup previous year, Prince Mohammed pushed aside his older and more experienced cousin to become first-in-line to his father's throne, setting himself up to control Saudi policy for decades to come. "Iran is far from being equal to Saudi Arabia", the prince said. He said he was restoring the more tolerant, egalitarian society that existed before Saudi Arabia's ultraconservatives were empowered in 1979. The Saudis and their allies are fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels, but worldwide organizations have harshly criticized the coalition's airstrikes and blockading of Yemeni ports for contributing to thousands of civilian deaths and a humanitarian catastrophe.

The rare Senate vote addressing American war powers aims to shut down U.S. military involvement in Yemen within a month unless Congress formally authorizes continued involvement. "We also have close and strong economic relationship with Saudi Arabia", the official said. MBS is turning "Saudi Arabia into a normal country in which normal people lead normal lives", Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told reporters Monday. He said, "There is a European-American understanding on the seriousness of the Iranian threats".

In MBS, Trump will find a sympathetic ear for his calls to crack down on Iran, Saudi Arabia's archenemy, and strengthen a 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran that former President Barack Obama and world powers brokered.

Still, the Times suggests that the supposedly pro-Saudi animation might be "a glimpse of a crown prince's dream" regarding the victorious end of ongoing tensions between the two countries. King Salman is to visit the United States later this year.

Saudi oil giant Aramco has also been eyeing an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, a deal which the United States has been eager to facilitate.
