Inconvenience for commuters as Ola, Uber drivers go on indefinite strike

Inconvenience for commuters as Ola, Uber drivers go on indefinite strike

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has again resorted to violence amid its call for indefinite strike of drivers of app-based taxi aggregator Ola and Uber in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and Bengaluru, among others.

Explaining the non-participation, Tanveer Pasha, president, Uber, TaxiForSure, Ola (UTO) drivers and owners association, said that the drivers are anyway struggling with low wages.

They are determined to continue with the strike till their demands are fulfilled by the companies. While the way to protest here is debatable, the reason has remained same over time.

Meanwhile, police has issued notices to leaders of the union under Section 149 of Criminal Procedure Code relating to unlawful assembly. "If he does not listen, we may handle the issue MNS-style", he stated in media reports.

Other taxi hailing unions, including the Mumbai Taximen's Union and Swaraj Vahan Chalak Malak Sanghatna have also extended their support and would be going ahead with the strike if their demands are not being fulfilled.

Over 45,000 cabs are attached to Uber and Ola in Mumbai alone.

The strike call didn't quite seem to reach Delhi, and National Capital Region, where life continued as usual. More than 500 million rides have been taken by people in India on Uber cabs in the four year since the ride-hailing company's debut in the country. A similar state is being noticed in cities like Bangalore as well.

Drivers were making a fraction of what was promised to them when they partnered with the companies, he added.

While these drivers living on a hand to mouth salaries risk their mere livelihood, both Uber, Ola and the Indian Government have failed to even comment in their favour. Thousands of Mumbaikars struggled to get radio cabs on Monday - while Uber's app had surge pricing with very few cabs, Ola's showed that no cabs were available. However, no meeting was conducted between the striking drivers and representatives of Uber, which shut its offices in Mumbai after the protestors started gathering outside. They have invested Rs 5-7 lakh and were expecting to make Rs 1.5 lakh a month.

Similar to Ola's Micro, Mini and Prime categories which offer different charges, the-driver-dissatisfaction-powered Namma TYGR provides "Hatchback" services at Rs 12.50 per km, sedan at Rs 14.50 per km and SUV at Rs 18.50 per km.

A disgruntled Naik also accused Ola and Uber of giving preference to the cabs they own. The drivers had alleged that they weren't getting their due.
