"Black Panther" remains Number 1 for 5 Straight Weeks

Despite a good attempt by Tomb Raider to derail Black Panther from the top of the U.S. box office the Marvel mega smash manages a fifth weekend at the top.

The new video game flick, meanwhile, starring Oscar victor Alicia Vikander, was a disappointment for Warner Bros., taking in only $23.5 million. The videogame-based action adventure score a B grade from moviegoers in CinemaScore exit polls. The studio plans to expand "I Can Only Imagine", based on the story behind the hit song of the same name, to more than 2,000 sites next weekend. "Wrinkle", directed by Ava DuVernay, declined by exactly half from its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five was "Love, Simon", led by Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner, earning an estimated $11.5 million.

The Disney/Marvel movie grossed $27 million over the weekend to top the new "Tomb Raider", which grossed $23 million.

King T'Challa retained his crown for at least one more time, as Black Panther eked out the latest Lara Croft/Tomb Raider remake to win its 5th straight box office trophy.

"Black Panther" is the year's biggest release by a long shot, having grossed $605 million domestically and $1.18 million worldwide. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" tops the list at $936 million followed by "Avatar" at $760 million. The film is also closing in on $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office. Recent tracking for the "Pacific Rim" sequel has been in the $20 million to $30 million range while "Sherlock Gnomes" was in the $13 million to $18 million range.

A Wrinkle in Time dropped 50 percent during its second weekend and fell to fourth place. The family-friendly Peter Rabbit added $5.2 million over the weekend to brings its six-week total to $102.4 million. Red Sparrow continues to do middling business with $4.5 million over the weekend, to raise its, we assume, disappointing three-week total to $39.6 million.

For the young actor, it's all about speaking things into existence as he previously revealed his mother predicted that he'd land a role in the movie that is set to eclipse The Avengers as the top-grossing superhero film of all time.

Focus Features' opening weekend of the thriller "7 Days in Entebbe" came in 13th with a modest $1.6 million at 838 locations.
