Diplomatic standoff fallout: Pak pulls out of WTO meet

"On March 18, the Second Secretary at the High Commission was aggressively followed by unidentified people in a auto, in close proximity, in an intimidating manner, while he was going to the Chhaye Khana restaurant", said a source, hinting at the content of the diplomatic note.

Kumar said there are several points of contention between the two countries that have been pending for quite some time now and that India wishes to raise them for resolution through diplomatic channels and not before the media.

India has invited over 40 countries for the WTO mini-ministerial meeting on March 19-20.

The bickering between India and Pakistan over alleged harassment of each other's diplomats took a new turn after Islamabad called its High Commissioner home for consultations, which was termed by India as "routine" and "normal".

While the WTO meeting would be a multilateral engagement, India's decision to invite Pakistan commerce minister Pervaiz Malik for the event is expected to liquefy the relationship.

Sources said, "On 18 March, second secretary at the High Commission was aggressively followed by unidentified people in a vehicle in close proximity in an intimidating manner while he was going to Chhaye Khana restaurant".

India reportedly sent a note verbale to Pakistan on Friday with seven points highlighting in chronological order incidents of Indian diplomats being harassed.

Out of these 26 incidents in Delhi, two were against school-going children of diplomats, sources said.

Dr Faisal denied New Delhi's allegation that similar incidents have occurred with Indian diplomats in Pakistan.

According to an Indian Express report, the incidents of harassment and intimidation started the day some positive diplomatic efforts came to a fruition on March 7.

"We want that our Commission in Islamabad functions smoothly, the officials are not harassed, their work is not obstructed and that the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations, 1961 is abided by", Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a press briefing.

While India has been accusing Pakistan of harassing its officials, Pakistan issued a demarche to India saying it was becoming hard for its diplomats to function in Delhi.
