France president Macron lands in India, greeted with trademark Modi hug

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron by visiting the airport here.

Addressing a joint press briefing after holding a bilateral with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi this afternoon, Mr Macron also said that stability in the Indian Ocean is important for the stability of the region.

"In order to further strengthen global non-proliferation, France reaffirmed its strong and active support to building consensus among regimes' members on the issue of India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, recognising that India's accession will add value to the aims and objectives of these regimes", the joint statement said.

France today pitched for starting negotiations over procurement of another batch of 36 Rafale jets by India with French President Emmanuel Macron describing the fighter jet programme as a key aspect of the bilateral defence cooperation.

Both sides also announced a vision document on cooperation on a number of space-research related issues, including space security. He was given a ceremonial welcome at the RashtraPati Bhawan on Saturday morning.

French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday said he wanted his country to be India's best partner in Europe as he started a three-day trip to the country aimed at ratcheting up security and energy ties.

Macron will be a on a state visit from Mar 9 to 12.

On his part, Macron said India and France have chose to work together to deal with threats of terrorism and radicalisation.

The ISA is conceived as a coalition of solar resource-rich countries to address their special energy needs and provide a platform to collaborate on dealing with the identified gaps through a common, agreed approach.

Till Thursday, 60 countries had signed the framework agreement of the ISA and 30 submitted the instruments of ratification. President Macron interacted with students at Bikaner House in New Delhi.

The 40-year-old president, who is travelling with a delegation of French companies that includes EDF (EDF.PA), Dassault Aviation (AVMD.PA), Schneider Electric (SCHN.PA) and Suez (SEVI.PA), will also inaugurate a solar plant built by Engie (ENGIE.PA) in Uttar Pradesh.
