Leonard's return to the line-up is not expected until later this month at the earliest.

While addressing the media for the first time since January 13, Leonard explained his decision to take a conservative approach from his quad injury.

It was a welcome surprise to hear these open, reassuring statements from the Spurs' star forward after the freaky series of events that have plagued his season. "We don't want to take any steps back and just aggravate things", Leonard continued.

"It's hard to explain, but obviously I'm a competitor", Leonard said. "It just wasn't where we wanted it to be".

Both the player and San Antonio will visit that when the time comes, but for now, the aim is to get him back to full health and on the floor to help the team compete for a championship.

Leonard was asked at practice if he wants to finish his career as a Spur and answered, "yeah, for sure".

They edged Memphis 100-98 on Monday to break out of a four-game losing skid at home. They understand the situation that I'm in.

The Spurs play at Oklahoma City on Saturday and at Houston on Monday.
