Joey Barton has given his honest opinion about Scott McTominay rejecting England

McTominay was born and raised in Lancaster, but his father, Frank, is Glaswegian and the player has made a decision to represent the Scots.

José Mourinho has hinted that McTominay should elect to play for Scotland in the past too.

Sport revealed that McTominay pledged his future to Scotland over the weekend after meeting Alex McLeish at United's training ground.

"He obviously wants his summers off". He's probably realised the weight of playing for England and working every summer, he doesn't want that.

"He has shown his ambition hasn't he?"

McTominay, who has been associated with United since he was five, signed a new contract in October that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2021.

"He'll be desperate to look at a lot of players, especially the young players that are around just now, and he'll want to see as many people as possible in these friendly games to make the decisions for the important games coming up next season".

And asked for his view, Barton said: "What's he playing at?"

It is understood McTominay has held long chats with Man United team-mates Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, who have told him to choose England.

"So fair play to the boy if he feels like a passionate Scotsman, it can only be a good thing for Scotland because he's a seriously talented player".

According to multiple reports, McTominay has decided to choose his father's native land of Scotland over his own home country.

McTominay may have been included in Southgate's squad for this summer's World Cup finals in Russian Federation had he chosen to represent England. Have your say by leaving a comment below.
