Ukraine 130th in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index

Qatar climbed two places to rank 29th out of 180 countries in the 2017 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), which is issued annually by Transparency International.

The index ranks countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people.

In the Corruption Perception Index for 2017, India ranked 81st with a score of 40.

Countries are then scored on a scale of zero, for highly corrupt, to 100, for very clean.

Although this marked an improvement from 2016, the score still lagged behind the global average of 43. Sub-Saharan Africa (32), Eastern Europe (34) and Central Asia (34) were those lagging farthest behind.

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has said that the latest report by Transparency International, TI, "makes a mockery" of the African Union's award to President Muhammadu Buhari as its anti-corruption champion. The Transparency International rated India as among the "worst offenders" in terms of graft and press freedom in the Asia Pacific region.

However, using nine out of the 13 data sources of independent institutions with high level of credibility, the 2017 CPI score indicates that, in spite of Ghana's numerous efforts to fight corruption, the canker is still a serious problem.

Analysis from Transparency International also showed that the countries with the least protection for mass media and non-governmental organizations also tend to have the worst rates of corruption.

The TI found that nearly all journalists killed since 2012 were killed in corrupt countries.

"They must do more to uphold public trust and confidence as leaders of the country's integrity building and anti-corruption efforts Ensure safe and secure environment for the media, civil society and other advocates to thrive". Two island countries, one New Zealand and other Singapore scored highest in corruption index with 89 and 84 marks respectively.

This is Jamaica's best ranking in the last 10 years.

However, the countries that have slipped in the worldwide ranking, include Syria - whose civil war will enter its eighth year in March - and Yemen, where fighting has raged for more than three years.

The government's Spokesperson on Governance and Legal Affairs, Herbert Krapa, explained that the report was not an indication that the current New Patriotic Party [NPP] government was corrupt.

Worawit said this assessment likely reflected the perception that investigations of criminal cases close to the government, case disclosure, political participation and press freedom remain weak points.
