Bill And Melinda Gates Are Not Happy About Trump's Budget Proposal

Melinda Gates also criticized how the president conducts himself on social media.

These varied from questions around overpopulation and climate change, to how Donald Trump's policies affect the Foundation's work, and what the Foundation has to show for the millions it has poured into areas such as education.

Their enormous wealth, privilege, and influence is one reason why they launched the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, they wrote. The full 10 questions and their responses can be found here.

Melinda also adds that they work with thousands of partners who keep them "connected to the people we're trying to help".

"Take the example of developing new diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines for diseases of poverty".

"You just have to go look in Twitter to see the disparaging comments over and over and over again about women and minorities", Melinda Gates said. The Foundation is hoping to move that needle, he said, by getting companies to focus their expertise without having to spend the money.

"Even if we measured everything the government did only by how much it helped American citizens, global engagement would still be a smart investment", said Bill. They acknowledge it's unfair that they have so much wealth and influence but reject the notion that they're imposing their values on other cultures.

"World leaders tend to take our phone calls and seriously consider what we have to say".

Among them: "Why don't you give more in the United States?"

The foundation will spend $1.7 billion on education over the next five years, as K-12 will remain their primary focus in the U.S. But as they take stock of the country - from the West Coast's growing income gap to the generations of racial inequities in the American South - the Gateses say they're looking at myriad problems that hinder children in the classroom.

Bill, who rode the tech wave of the late 20th century to a one-time $100 billion fortune, once said he wished he wasn't the richest person in the world. "Our goal is to do what our parents taught us and do our part to improve the state of the world".

Bill said that the couple recently spent time in the American South, and were affected by what they saw.

"That means we need to hire well, consult experts, learn constantly, and seek out different viewpoints", he said.

While jokingly saying the pair never disagrees, Melinda explained she gets the question "all the time", whereas Bill rarely does.

"The answer is that we think there's always going to be a unique role for foundations".

Gates said although "we disagree with this administration more than the others we've met with", it's still important to work together whenever possible.

"Because I've been a public figure longer, and because I'm a man, some people assume I am making the big decisions". And we use our resources in a very specific way: to test out promising innovations, collect and analyze the data and let businesses and governments scale up and sustain what works.

Whereas if we don't try some ideas that fail, we're not doing our jobs. Here's another question we get a lot: "Why are you really giving your money away - what's in it for you?"It's not because we think about how we'll be remembered".
