Smooth trial run for new OSS inspection process in Daytona 500 prelude

A sponsorship deal with GoDaddy to close her racing career with Daytona and the Indianapolis 500 was announced last month and was followed by confirmation of Premium Motorsports as the NASCAR team fielding her auto.

Bowman won the pole for "The Great American Race" in his debut as the driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet, piloted until last season by NASCAR rock star Dale Earnhardt Jr.

At tracks like Daytona International Speedway, where the season kickoff, this framing works as the cars typically race in one giant pack condensing the field into a manageable video shot.

Patrick finishes her racing career as the highest-finishing female driver in the Daytona 500 (eighth, 2013) and Indy 500 (third, 2009). Unlike in past years, the 2018 Clash will be a Sunday afternoon race and take place after Daytona 500 qualifying rather than as a Saturday night event, a change that was spurred by rain postponing the 2017 Clash from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Bowman posted the fastest lap in the first round of qualifying and then edged out Denny Hamlin for the top spot with his run in the second round. Only the front row was locked in during Sunday's qualifying session. "Its Daytona", he said. "It's a dream come true just to drive for Hendrick Motorsports".

Hendrick put Chevrolet on the pole for the sixth straight year. Bowman raced just three times on the national level last season, two Xfinity Series races and one in the Truck Series, and filled his time using a simulator as he waited for Earnhardt to retire.

"We were team Key West", Patrick said. He led all drivers with eight victories, while no one else won more than five races.

"One thing I will say, that the (OSS) process has really made a whole different week out of this", Penske said. "Trust me, that is pressure", Truex said. I do it basically before I get to the racetrack. There's not a whole lot you can do when you get down here. "A couple of days ago I was thinking to myself that we should have run the backup auto in the (exhibition)".

"Imagine when you leave here on Sunday, you don't have anything to do really for a couple of months".

He easily could have won last year's final race but displayed veteran class when he laid off and let Kyle Busch and Truex Jr. race for the cup. Once you get over the fear that he'll tap the wall and realize that he is in absolute control of the 42 machine, you'll find it hard to fathom that he's ever lost there.
