Trump Doesn't Care that Russia Is Targeting the Midterm Elections

Coats told members of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee that they "need to assume that there might be interference" after Russian Federation "upped their game" by manipulating social media ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Coats said will be among the most volatile and confrontational weapons of mass destruction (WMD) threats to the U.S. over the next year.

"We expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokesmen and other means to influence, to try to build on its wide range of operations and exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States", Coats added.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WVEC)- The nation's intelligence agency chiefs said Tuesday there's no doubt the Russians interfered in the 2016 elections with sophisticated cyber operations and false information social media campaigns, and there's no doubt they will keep trying.

Other senators asked Coats, Pompeo, Wray and their counterparts to restate their support for the 2017 assessment that concluded Russian Federation had attacked the previous year's election.

"We have seen Russian activity and intentions to have an impact on the next election cycle", CIA Director Mike Pompeo told the Senate intelligence committee. "This is not going to change or stop".

USA intelligence agencies concluded past year that Moscow sought to influence the 2016 presidential campaign in favor of then-Republican candidate Donald Trump.

King contrasted that with the frequent denials and equivocations about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by President Trump and the White House, which King said have led to a major disparity in belief around the country.

Coats' assessment runs counter to statements from Trump, who has cast doubt on the notion of Russian meddling and denied any collusion by his associates with Russia ahead of his surprise November 2016 defeat of Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Executives from social media companies such as Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. have testified repeatedly in Congress about Russia's purported disinformation drive aimed at US voters. He said al-Qaida "will remain a major actor in global terrorism" and will remain "intent on attacking the United States and USA interests overseas". "In particular, I'm anxious about the close relationship between the Chinese government and Chinese technology firms, particularly in the area of commercialisation of our surveillance technology and efforts to shape telecommunication equipment markets", he said.

"No single agency is, quote, in charge", he said.

American Intelligence Chief Dan Coats has claimed that Pakistan is developing new types of nuclear weapons, including short-range tactical ones.

DHS says it is providing state and local election officials with real-time intelligence on the threats.

Regardless, U.S. intelligence officials testifying at the Senate hearing said Kim Jong Un still views nuclear weapons as key to his own survival in power. "The Russians have a strategy that goes well beyond what is happening in the United States".

The panel's vice chairman, Virginia Senator Mark Warner, said the threat is real.
