IDC: Google Sold A "Tiny" 3.9M Pixel Phones In 2017

IDC: Google Sold A

Data from IDC shows that Google Pixel sales doubled past year to 3.9 million, but still represents "a tiny portion of the 1.5 billion market size".

Disclosed to investors, Google advised Pixel phone shipments doubled in 2017 - a claim substantiated by IDC.

Google won't say how many Pixel phones it shipped in 2017, but one analyst from the research firm IDC has a number: 3.9 million.

Jeronimo points out how it's a "remarkable achievement to double sales", especially during a time when consumers mostly already have smartphones. IDC's Francisco Jeronimo has been spilling the sales stats on the Pixel range, and the good news is that Google is on the right trajectory.

In comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus sold 20 million devices in around four months previous year.

Google may not be entirely new to the smartphone scene, but it's still a minor player when it comes to sales. Google launched the Pixel 2 in October past year. Google seems to have improved its supply line issues with the Pixel 2, which has consistently been in stock.

Pixel smartphone sales are certainly heading in the right direction, validating the company's recent push into making Google hardware. That means Apple needed 4.6 days to sell 3.9 million iPhones - mind you, these aren't iPhone X units, as Apple did not divulge the actual split for the period. The original Pixel phones launched in October 2016, which gave them less than three months of availability, so the 3.9 million figure includes both generations of Pixel handsets.

One thing not many people will realize is that Google's smartphone pricing is even more high-end than Apple's, though.
