BMW X4 luxury SUV revealed, starts at more than $51000

A 265hp diesel engine and 360hp petrol engine are set to follow, but United Kingdom prices for these are not yet confirmed.

To make the most of that power, not only do they have a firmer suspension set-up and a sports transmission, they also come on 20-inch alloy wheels as standard and have a sports exhaust system. A more powerful version of the same engine is fitted in the xDrive25d, with 228bhp and 0-62mph taking 6.8 seconds.

When can I buy a BMW X4?

Based on the same platform as the all-new BMW X3, the sportier X4 looks to be a bit more grown-up with softer creases and rounded edges.

Engine options are pretty much what you'd expect from the X3, with all engine options coming with eight-speed automatic, with two diesel options - xDrive20d and xDrive 30d - and two petrol options - xDrive20i and xDrive30i.

The 355bhp petrol-engined M40i gets to 62mph in 4.8 seconds and has claimed fuel economy of around 31mpg, while the equivalent figures on the diesel M40d are 322bhp, 4.9 seconds and 44.1mpg. Boot space is rated at 525 litres with the rear seats up or 1430 litres with the seats down. For the ultimate in personalisation, items from the BMW Individual range are also available, including metallic paints and wheels up to 21 inches in diameter.

BMW slightly revised the exterior of the X4 and stretched the dimensions, similar to the X3 that was new for previous year.

The 2019 X4 will hit dealerships in July with a starting price of $51,445 for the xDrive30i and $61,445 for the M40i; all prices include a $995 destination charge. That model can sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.6 seconds.

The 2018 BMW X4 is wider (54mm) and longer (81mm) than the outgoing SUV, but weighs 50kg less thanks to the extensive use of aluminium and ultra-high-strength grades of steel.

A straight-six diesel will power the range-topping M40d, which will generate 326PS and 680Nm of torque. In addition to the BMW X4, the models BMW X3, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 are produced for the world market at this plant.

Apple and Android phones are fully supported, as are their respective smart watches, along with Amazon Alexa and Google Home personal assistants; BMW suggests that a route could be planned via any of these methods before being transferred to your vehicle, based on calendar entries and other information. (Yes, Apple CarPlay will probably cost more in the X4.) Available tech includes a wide head-up display and active safety features such as adaptive cruise control, active lane control, forward collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitors.

The new X4 also features standard navigation and the newest iDrive system, which includes improved voice recognition.
